A project like Beyond Cold Water Boot Camp only happens with the passion and hard work of partners and there was no shortage for this initiative. The partners involved with Beyond Cold Water Boot Camp were concerned about the number of deaths that occurred due to accidental cold water immersion and knew that with delivery of the information a difference could be made. The key organizations that made Beyond Cold Water Boot Camp a reality include:

National Search and Rescue Secretariat Transport Canada, Office of Boating Safety Canadian Safe Boating Council
Lifesaving Society Helly Hansen Dr. Gordon Geisbrecht, PH.D & Ted Rankine
Mustang Survival Salus Marine Wear Marsars Water Rescue Systems
Kokatat Muskoka Paddle Shack

National Search and Rescue Secretariat
search_rescueThe National Search and Rescue Secretariat is an independent agency of the federal government that reports directly to the Lead Minister for Search and Rescue, the Minister of National Defence. Created in 1986, the Secretariat works with all levels of government, police and emergency services to manage and improve search and rescue activities throughout Canada. It is responsible for the development, co-ordination, analysis and review of policies, plans and specific components and activities in support of the National Search and Rescue Program (NSP).

Amongst its many activities, National Search and Rescue Secretariat also publishes the quarterly SARSCENE magazine, stages the annual SARSCENE Conference and manages the SAR New Initiatives Fund (NIF), on behalf of the Lead Minister for Search and Rescue. SAR NIF provides annual funding for new projects (or initiatives) that will improve the National SAR Program. It is through the NIF program that Cold Water Boot Camp received its funding.

Transport Canada, Office of Boating Safetytransport_canada
Transport Canada's Office of Boating Safety (OBS) is the Government of Canada's focal point for the recreational boating community. The OBS delivers prevention-based programs and vital information for users and builders of recreational boats to reduce the safety risks and environmental impacts of boating on Canadian waters. The OBS is also responsible for the regulations and standards that apply to recreational boats in Canada. While the OBS encourages safe boating practices and compliance with the regulations through education, awareness, and information, it also leverages the support of non-profit/volunteer groups to promote boating safety across Canada.

Transport Canada is the federal government search and rescue partner that has been working with the National Search and Rescue Secretariat to deliver Cold Water Boot Camp to the Canadian public.

Canadian Safe Boating Councilcan_safe_boat_council
The Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC) is in the business of promoting safe and responsible boating throughout Canada. As an alliance of members committed to preventing boating injuries and drownings, the Canadian Safe Boating Council works to achieve its mission by providing professional development for its members and its other partner organizations in Canada.

In addition to the ongoing outreach to boaters across Canada, the CSBC also manages the Canadian portion of the North American Safe Boating Awareness Week Campaign, the Canadian Safe Boating Awards, an Annual Symposium and in the case of Cold Water Boot Camp, providing the distribution and outreach services for the program elements.

Lifesaving Societylife_saving_society
The Lifesaving Society is a national registered charity organization working to prevent drowning and water-related injury through our training programs, Water Smart® public education, safety management services, drowning prevention research and lifesaving sport.  Visit for more information.
Beyond their partnership with the Beyond Boot Camp event itself, the Canadian Safe Boating Council would like to extend our thanks for the Lifesaving Society’s continued participation in disseminating the DVD to requesting organizations.

Helly Hansenhelly_hanson
'We work hard so you can play harder'

Helly Hansen provides high quality, protective technical gear for work survival and sport. They work and play in the harshest environments on the planet to learn what's needed to create the best performance gear possible. And they work closely with people who work and/or play outdoors more days than they are indoors to continuously optimize the technology and design of our products.

Established in 1877, Helly Hansen’s technical outdoor products are designed to be an enabling layer between human will and nature’s forces. And one group of Helly Hansen products are lifejackets manufactuered and used for recreational and work wear.

Helly Hansen understands the needs of designing and manufacturing well fitting and comfortable lifejackets to encourage boaters to wear them, not just stow them under the seats. And the boot campers who spent time in the water at Cold Water Boot Camp were protected by Helly Hansen jackets.

As part of their commitment to the partnership with Cold Water Boot Camp, Helly Hansen also provided the Boot Camp apparel worn by the campers both in and out of the water.

Dr. Gordon Geisbrecht, PH.D & Ted Rankine
Dr. Gordon Giesbrecht is a professor of thermophysiology at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg where he runs the Laboratory for Exercise and Environmental Medicine, and studies human responses to exercise and work in extreme environments.

dr_gordonGordon combines practical experiences as a wilderness instructor with 20 years of human cold research, conducting hundreds of lab and field trials which have led to the publication of more than 100 articles about cold physiology and pre-hospital care for human hypothermia. In 2006, Gordon teamed up with outdoors expert Jim Wilkerson to publish 'Hypothermia Frostbite and Other Cold Injuries'.

Gordon has devoted his life and career to exploring the risks of cold water immersion and hypothermia. Famous for throwing himself (and others) into frigid waters in order to give first-hand experience to his research, “Professor Popsicle” is one of the world’s foremost authorities on the body’s response to cold. He has been featured on the Discovery Channel, National Geographic and a number of television networks including David Lettermen's Late Show.

ted_rSince the late 1980's Ted Rankine has been the Host and driving force behind one of the most popular magazine-style shows, Power Boat Television. On the program airing in Canada and the U.S., the promotion of the use of lifejackets was a constant and important message to viewers.
Ted has been involved on the front lines with such organizations as the Canadian Coast Guard, the United States Coast Guard, Canadian Safe Boating Council, Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons, United States Power Squadrons, NASBLA and has been instrumental in the production of countless safety initiatives for TV, print, web and DVD distribution.

Ted has partnered with Dr. Giesbrecht many times: once in Alaska to help with a Cold Water Immersion project for Discovery Channel, again in Manitoba for the production of a Winter Ice Roads safety program, for the original Cold Water Boot Camp event and DVD, and now, for Beyond Cold Water Boot Camp, advanced training for First Responders and Boating Safety Educators.
